Jack was in big trouble—and he knew it.

Shoot. Why had he let himself kiss Colleen?

Jack stood in his apartment at the table, folding his weekly load of laundry. In the two days since rescuing that kid and the kiss, he had avoided headquarters and the Crisis Response Team.

Because he wanted it—the life that suddenly felt real and whole and…

Despite his best efforts, he liked the team. Liked his life here.

Liked Colleen.

Very much.

But being with her—and the team—would eventually mean telling the truth. And not about the military.

About his stint in Stillwater. His crime.

Yep, no.

Except, he was having a harder and harder time dodging the idea that maybe he was supposed to be here. The words he’d said to Elijah’s dad kept winding through his brain—right place, right time.

And it seemed he wasn’t the only one to share that thought.

Earlier today, while walking back from the laundromat with his duffel full of clean clothes, a sheriff’s cruiser had pulled up next to him. Kyle Hueston had stepped out.

“Hey man, I heard about your adventure at Palisade Head.” Kyle’s uniform jacket had been zipped up tight against the cold breeze blowing in from Lake Superior.

“Yeah, that climbing trip didn’t turn out quite how I’d expected.” A double meaning, as the end of that adventure was unexpected too. Not that Jack minded being kissed by a pretty girl. In fact, he’d love to repeat that part.

He just didn’t want to get them both in over their heads.

“You were right about the location, though. It’s a great place for climbing. Boone drove me back to get our gear and my truck, and I spotted another place I’d like to try.” Jack had shifted his laundry to the other hand. “I’m looking forward to giving it a second chance.” He’d also given Boone an earful about Bill Hooper’s casual attitude toward in-air safety. Boone had said Bill came highly recommended but promised to look into the situation.

“I’m glad you were there when you were. Sounds like a case of right place, right time. God’s ordained timing, used for His purpose.”

God had a purpose for him? That was certainly hard to believe most days. His skepticism must have showed because Kyle had given him a smile as he’d turned to get back into his car. “Believe what you want. My opinion is that God had you right in position where He wanted you. We could use a guy like you on our team permanently. I know Boone has been after you. I’m adding my voice to his. Consider staying on.”

Consider staying on. Only one problem with that—he didn’t want to be pulled back in to being on a team.

Or so he tried to tell his traitorous heart.

Jack folded another shirt, tucking in the sleeves and then rolling it up like he’d been trained to do. His thoughts kept straying back to that moment when Colleen had kissed him. “You’re a real live hero.”

Oh boy. Maybe he could just not tell her. Even as he thought that, he rejected it.
